Antabuse

Antabuse (generic name Disulfiram) is an oral drug used for treating alcohol dependence. There is a disputed assumption that Antabuse is also effective in cases of cocaine dependence and cancer diseases. More researches are being taken to study the possible uses of the drug.

Antabuse is an aldehyde dehydrogenase inhibitor, which means that the principles of Antabuse taking effect are based on the drug’s ability to inhibit the aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme that is responcible for clearing the blood from alcohol remnants. Blocking of this enzyme means that body cannot dispose of the adverse effects of alcohol which leads to further developing of such symptoms as nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, flushing, headache, etc.

Your prescriber may advise you start with 500 mg dose for a week or a fortnight. Later on the dose will be adjusted according to your individual needs that much depend on your condition and degree of your alcohol dependence and normally ranges between 125 and 500 mg per day.

Antabuse is to be stored at room temperature. Do not store the drug in bathroom or exposed to direct sun rays. Dispose of the drug after the expiry date.
